The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
