Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
